Crises of faith are the dominant theme of Héctor Tobar’s “Deep Down Dark,” the story of 33 men who were buried for 69 days in a collapsed Chilean mine in 2010. With his exclusive access to the survivors, Tobar, a Pulitzer Prize-­winning journalist, graphically recounts the quandaries that beset the men as well as their families — camped out at the mine’s entrance — the officials and rescue crews as a worldwide audience watched. There is weeping. There is acceptance of death. There is the miners’ terror, every time the rescue drill stops, that they have been given up for dead. “The silence just destroyed us,” one man told Tobar. “Without a positive sign, your faith collapses. Because faith isn’t totally blind.” Some men find a stronger connection to God (“Omar realizes that the improbable fact of their survival also carries a hint of the divine. Even on a good day, in modern times and in a developed country, miners navigate a hellscape of sweat, injuries and death traps, all the while listening to loud, potentially fatal crashes and rock-crumbles surrounding them. Many miners arrive at work hungry on purpose, “to avoid the vomiting caused by working underground in intense heat, humidity and dust-filled air.”

As for a bad day — or a bad 69 days, in the case of these men — being stuck in a mine involves full-body funguses; starvation so debilitating that one man’s attempt to stand was like watching a horse “trying to walk right after it’s born”; fading flashlight batteries; total, disorienting darkness; and more of that unrelenting rock-crashing sound, which keeps them awake (and, under the circumstances, extra-paranoid) at night. No wonder some miners think of the mountain as not just alive but angry.

Given the men’s hopelessness in the first few hours of the collapse, it seems impossible that they will be able to continue on for long. And the tension Tobar creates, in the best true-crime style, is almost excruciating. But just when the narrative threatens to become a monotonous or repetitive horror show, a new destructive element arrives on the scene.
