A file with the HWP file extension is a Hangul Word Processor file, or sometimes called a Hanword Document file. This file format was created by the South Korean company Hancom.
HWP files are similar to MS Word's DOCX files, except that they can contain Korean written language, making it one of the standard document formats used by the South Korean government.
HWP is also an abbreviation for things that have nothing to do with a word processor, like Hewlett-Packard Company (it's old stock symbol, replaced by HPQ) and health and welfare plan.

Don't confuse the HWP format with Hedgewars Saved Game or Demo files, which use the HWS and HWD file extension. Those types of files are used with the Hedgewars game.
If you find that an application on your PC does try to open the HWP file but it's the wrong application or if you would rather have another installed program open HWP files.

Hangul saves documents in Hangul office format, with the filename extension *.hwp.[2] It is one of the standard document formats of the South Korean government. HWP files, up to the versions created with Hangul '97, can be opened with OpenOffice.org (version 4.1.1 or earlier[3]) or LibreOffice. However, files created with later editions of Hangul, including Hangul Wordian, Hangul 2002, Hangul 2005 and Hangul 2007 cannot be opened with OpenOffice or LibreOffice, due to the major changes in the document structure. These later versions of Hangul do not provide support for opening and saving of files in Microsoft Word format, but users are not necessarily aware of this. Consequently, Korean Hangul users may often send files to non-Koreans in .hwp format, not realizing the recipient will be unable to open such files.[4]
Hangul was intended in 2009 to gain support for reading and writing of Office Open XML and OpenDocument files.[5]
The HWP binary format specification has been published online free by Hancom on June 29, 2010.[6][7]

Haansoft near bankruptcy[edit]
Haansoft was on the verge of bankruptcy after the release of its 2002 version, due to the widespread use of illegal copies. A campaign to support the development of Korean software and promote the purchase of legal copies of Hangul allowed Haansoft to recover.[9]

On Thursday, members of Cisco’s Talos security team said they recently discovered a new email campaign that attempts to infect South Korean computers with a trojan dubbed NavRAT. The spear phishing messages reference the possible US-North Korean summit and attach a document that exploits a vulnerability in the Hangul Word Processor, which is used in South Korea. Talos said it had medium confidence the emails are the work of a North Korean hacking group they call Group123.
